I work in mixed media, starting with a rough pencil sketch on cold pressed archival paper – Fabriano and Canson. Using layers of dry and wet materials, working with aqaurellable pencils, gesso, acrylic paint and conte in black, white and earth colours, I add texture by sprinkling salt and coffee powder when the paper is still wet. Once dry, I bring in some thick and thin lines, shading in a loose manner, almost like rubbing over the contours of the horse. Rigid lines have given way to more playful ones. My goal is not to draw the horse in a defined way. I draw my horses the way I see them in my mind—powerful, muscular, free and poetic beings.
